New license plates in Switzerland in 2026

License plates for Swiss vehicles are currently formed from 2 letters (representing the canton in which the vehicle is registered) followed by a number up to 6 digits long. This represents around 1,000,000 combinations for each canton. In order to anticipate the exhaustion of combinations for new registrations, the Federal Council has decided to overhaul the plate model in 2023, for implementation from 2026. The new system could incorporate new numbers and/or letters. At the same time, the current "CH" sticker, mandatory for all foreign travel, is to be replaced by the integration of the state symbol on the license plate.
